COOPERATIVE PLANNING
AND TEACHING
Through the collaborative process, the teacher librarian and teachers
are involved as team workers in the development of curriculum which
integrates resources and information literacy skills.
This partnership focuses on developing
student-centered programs which are planned, implemented and evaluated
together.
To the planning sessions, each teacher brings particular
areas of expertise, and together they build on these to
develop a collaborative learning environment for the students.
The classroom teacher knows
the students' needs and the instructional program; the teacher
librarian brings in expertise in resources, curriculum development,
and information literacy skills.

During team planning sessions, teachers
and the teacher librarian define and discuss:
- the desired learning outcomes
(attitudes, concepts, skills),
- the knowledge, abilities, interests,
and special needs of the students,
- resource based activities,
that is, nature and content of the subject matter,
- availability of resources
- learning styles,
- teaching strategies and responsibilities,
- new information skills required
by students,
- time available for planning
and teaching the unit,
- availability of planning team
(teacher librarian and teachers),
- procedures for evaluating students
products and /or presentations,
- assessment of the unit's effectiveness
in achieving the desired learning outcomes.
Subject content and information literacy
skills are mutually taught, practiced, monitored, and evaluated
in the context of a curricular unit. Activities and assignments
take into account student diversity, and require the use of multiple
learning resources. Evaluation
is both formative and summative, including the assessment
of content and information skills and strategies.
The teaching team works with a sequential,
developmental
continuum of competencies to integrate the information literacy
skills with discipline-related objectives.
Learning experiences are defined and
enriched as teachers and the teacher librarian plan and teach
them together in a collaborative learning environment, engaging,
directing, and encouraging students in the integration of the
information process model with the school program.
