Scaffolding Literacy

The strategies are:-

  • Book Selection, where books are chosen with a view to what the children need to know in their writing
  • Low order book orientation, where 'common knowledge' about context and content is introduced
  • Scaffolded conversation, where all children learn to talk about text (talk becomes 'inner thinking')
  • High order book orientation, where 'common knowledge' between teacher and children about language choices is introduced
  • Reading
  • Transformations make language choices concrete. They prepare for writing and spelling. They also provide extra scaffolding for reading
  • Spelling, where graphophonic (symbol/sound) and orthographic (spelling conventions) analysis are taught
  • Reconstructed writing, where children practise using the language choices of the author
  • Patterned writing, where children use some of the author's language in a different context
  • Independent writing, where children have reached a new level of competence. This provides an evaluation tool for the teacher.

On this website we show how to use the strategies with one book:

" The 27th Annual African Hippopotamus Race".

We have also given a list of other books we have used in the Scaffolding Literacy teaching sequence. As they become available we will provide brief notes on these books.
