Fluent Scaffolded
Reading
After the High Order Book Orientation the
teacher checks each child's reading.
Preparation:
A transcript of the text for the teacher
A photocopy of the text for the child
A copy of the book
Procedure:
Each child reads aloud to the teacher.
The teacher notes any miscues on her transcript.
The teacher mostly remains silent, but can prompt by referring
briefly to what was said in the book orientation.
After reading, the teacher praises particular correct reading, puts
a sticker on the photocopy of the text, and children paste the be-stickered
text into their workbook as proof of their ability to read that passage.
The teacher will choose to discuss one or two miscues with particular
children.
If children make miscues, the teacher returns to the High Level Book
Orientation with different emphasis on difficult passages.
She can choose to include difficult passages in transformation lessons.
After transformation lessons, the teacher listens again to any children
who made several miscues in the first reading.
The teacher files the dated transcripts to record each child's reading
ability.
Occasionally, transcripts are examined in detail by completing a Reading
Analysis form. Such forms are included in
children's files at least twice a year.
